Who I Work Best With

I work best with clients who are struggling with mental health and addictions, couples who are needing effective communication tools and who are also wanting to find alternative ways of working through conflict that results in resolution as opposed to going in circles that keep them stuck in old patterns. I also specialize in child and youth care. My strengths are with children ages 4 to 10.

What it’s like to Work with Me

I think most people who walk through my door are looking for solutions to the issues they are dealing with. It is my belief that when a person understands the underlying issues, behaviours, and/or stuck patterns that are causing them distress, they are in a much better position to deal effectively with their problems. Clients would describe me as warm, gentle, non-judgmental, compassionate, and direct.

The human behind the therapist

I am someone who has come to understand humanness not simply through years of professional experience, but through my own journey of struggle, recovery, and growth. Having overseen addiction myself, I have learned that beneath the labels we place on people are often stories of pain, resilience, and an enduring capacity for change. After decades of working in mental health and addictions, I continue to be humbled by the people who have trusted me with their stories and by the privilege of walking alongside them during some of the most challenging times of their lives. I try to bring that same humility, curiosity, compassion, and authenticity into my work and my relationships. Being a dad has deepened my understanding of love, responsibility, vulnerability, and reliability. Parenthood has taught me that none of us have life completely figured out. I am happiest when I am moving, exploring new places. Skiing, mountain biking, swimming, running and surfing is how I recharge, fill my days when I'm not working. I have a deep love and connection to the Tragically Hip, whose music has been the soundtrack to many chapters of my life. These parts of my life are more than just hobbies; they keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of adventure, having fun, challenging myself, nature, family connection, and finding joy in the present moment. I believe in the possibility of change because I have experienced it myself, and I believe that being human means continually finding our way through the messy, beautiful, painful, and imperfect journey of becoming who we are.

My Experience & Training

I have a Masters in Child and Youth Care with a specialization in counselling psychology from the University of Victoria. I have over 20 years of experience supporting people with mental health and addictions. I am a level 2 Gottman Method couples therapist, I am certified in CBT, DBT, trauma informed therapy, and I'm a certified psychedelic assisted therapist through the Integrative Psychiatry Institute in Boulder Colorado.
