Understanding your inner world begins with welcoming every part of yourself.

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps you explore and understand the many “parts” within you.  The different thoughts, feelings, and inner voices that make up your unique internal world.

Rather than viewing these parts as conflicting or problematic, IFS invites curiosity and compassion toward each one. Every part of you, even the ones that feel reactive, anxious, or avoidant, holds a purpose and is trying to protect you in some way.

In therapy, you’ll begin to recognize these inner voices, understand their needs, and learn how to lead them with calm and clarity. Through this process, you’ll develop a more balanced and integrated sense of self, one rooted in self-trust and harmony.

Why you might be here

When you're tired of the inner tug of war

When your inner world feels conflicted, life can feel confusing and draining. You may find yourself constantly meeting others’ expectations, holding back your true feelings, or struggling with self-criticism. Perhaps you feel unseen, judged, or pressured to perform, leaving little room to explore who you truly are.

You might notice:

  • Feeling pulled in opposite directions by conflicting emotions
  • Trying to please others while ignoring your own needs
  • A strong inner critic that’s hard to quiet
  • Struggling to trust your intuition or make decisions
  • Feeling disconnected from your emotions or sense of purpose

How Therapy Helps

Learn what your parts need and how to care for them

IFS therapy shifts the focus from fixing or analyzing to forming a compassionate relationship with all parts of yourself.

Instead of labeling certain thoughts or feelings as bad, IFS sees every part.  Even the ones that feel reactive, anxious, or avoidant, as trying to protect you in its own way.

In therapy, you’ll be guided to:

  • Identify the different “parts” of your inner system and how they interact
  • Build compassion for the voices that carry fear, shame, or self-criticism
  • Learn how to soothe and communicate with protective parts
  • Develop self-leadership so your calm, centered Self guides your healing
  • Integrate all parts into a sense of balance, understanding, and trust

The Outcome

Grounded in awareness. Integrated in Self. Aligned with Purpose.

By forming a compassionate relationship with your parts, you begin to see that there’s nothing within you that needs to be erased. Only understood.

You may experience:

  • A greater sense of calm and inner safety
  • Less internal conflict and more emotional balance
  • Deeper self-compassion and acceptance
  • Stronger relationships rooted in authenticity
  • A renewed trust in your intuition and inner wisdom
  • Healing from emotional wounds that once felt overwhelming

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, often called parts work, is a counselling approach that helps you explore the different parts of your inner world (such as protectors, exiles, or inner critics). By connecting with your core “Self,” IFS fosters self-compassion, deeper healing and self-integration of your varying parts.

How does IFS therapy work?

IFS works by guiding you to identify and listen to different parts of yourself instead of pushing them away. Our therapists will help you connect with these parts through curiosity and compassion, allowing your “Self” to lead the healing process. Over time, this reduces inner conflict and increases clarity, confidence, and a sense of inner peace.

What is parts work in IFS therapy?

Parts work is the process of identifying and understanding the different parts of yourself, such as managers, protectors, and wounded child parts. In IFS, these parts are seen as protective, even when their strategies feel unhelpful. Your therapist will help you build compassionate relationships with them resulting in self-integration.

What happens in an IFS therapy session?

A typical 50–60 minute session may involve guided reflection, visualization, and dialogue with parts of yourself. Our IFS therapist supports you in connecting with your Self-energy—the calm, compassionate core that can bring healing to hurt or overworked parts. This delicate process is best done with an IFS trained practitioner. Check our therapist directory to meet the ones on our clinical team!

What is the role of the Self in IFS?

The Self is your core state of calm, clarity, compassion, and curiosity. In IFS, the Self is seen as the natural leader of your internal system. When the Self is in the lead, protective parts can relax, wounded parts can heal, and you can feel more whole and balanced. As it can be hard to connect to the Self at times, our IFS trained therapists can help guide you towards reconnection.

Does IFS really work for trauma?

Yes. IFS is an evidence-based therapy for trauma and PTSD. Research shows it helps people heal traumatic memories without re-traumatization, regulate emotions, and feel safer in their relationships. Many of our clients in BC choose IFS for its gentle, empowering approach to trauma healing.

How many IFS sessions are usually needed?

The number of sessions depends on your goals and history. Some clients notice meaningful shifts after a few sessions, while others choose longer-term IFS therapy to address deep trauma or long-standing patterns. As with most therapies, we suggest a minimum of 12 sessions to see sustained change.

It’s best to confirm directly with your provider. Our Vancouver clinic issues detailed receipts to make the reimbursement process simple and stress-free.
